Why Honesty Is Important In

Why Honesty Is Important In Business

In a day and age where intangible human traits that are marks of integrity are sometimes ignored or cast aside in favor of cutthroat, performance-first mindsets, honesty is often underestimated in its relevance and importance, especially in the business world. After all, why should an executive be honest when ?cooking the books? to reflect their accounting differently can make a company appear more profitable than it truly is, thus provoking more investors? Despite examples like this, honesty is critical for organizational success for a few key reasons.

Interoffice Communication

Whether a business employees two people or two hundred, it is essential that they communicate in transparent, trustworthy ways. Considering the obvious importance of effective communication, honesty forms an integral part, ensuring that every bit of information transferred between each other is a fact and not a piece of damaging fiction.

The consequences of a lack of honest in interoffice communications include a hostile work environment, a loss of trust among co-workers, employees vying for more individual opportunities rather than valuing teamwork, and an overall loss in morale, which can negatively impact productivity.

Vendor Relations

Companies relay several kinds of information to vendors, often increasing in the sensitivity of such messages as these relations improve and deepen. For example, although at first inquiring organizations may simply request prices and offer basic ideas of their needs, eventually they may share current inventory marks, future supply-sensitive projects, marketing calendars, and other tidbits that, in a mutually honest relationship, can service both parties.

However, the risk of lying to a vendor in order to land a better deal (such as promising a later contract for a cheap run now, only to pull out the next month in favor of another target) or other half-truth wrangling comes at the simple cost of burning bridges. One that vendor is burned, and will likely never deal with the organization again, that represents one less resource the business can use in order to meet its objectives.

Public Image

The idea of this one is simple: People tend not to be especially fond of liars. Although the downfall of, say, Enron was due to much more than a public relations meltdown, that tertiary consequence of their lying and book-cooking would certainly have been a tremendous hurdle to their long-term recovery, had one bothered to have been attempted.

In the end, all things considered, the old adage holds true: ?Honesty is the best policy.? It turns out this is applies to both corporate and personal policies, critical to both organizational success and human integrity.

Lily White

Lily White

Lee White is a criminal defense lawyer practicing on Long Island. Into her life drifts Norman Torkelson, a career con man charged with strangling to death his latest mark. At first the case seems routine, the evidence overwhelming. Norman—manly, magnetic, and morally reprehensible—is a man who crisscrosses America working his cruel marriage scam: love ‘em, liquidate their assets, leave ‘em. Clearly, he murdered Bobette Frisch, his latest patsy. But just as Lee is resigning herself to the inevitable “Guilty!” verdict, she begins to have doubts. What, after all, was Norman’s motive for killing? Why not do what he had done for the last twenty years: run, leaving behind a broke and broken-hearted victim? Lee starts to wonder if her client is not merely not guilty, but covering for the real killer—and, in doing so, performing the first selfless act of his life.

Having been employed on a consultancy basis to assist a CEO deal with a very hostile takeover, of what used to be his company, I have had to draw on all my couching skills. It is problematic as he is feeling let down by the shareholders and at times he feels betrayed as they went behind his back, and sold out to a huge firm that will see them devour and break up his old company in to various sections of a much bigger corporation. The old CEO will just become a manager of a worthless department that has no real function.

My coaching skills are to be tested to the full, as this guy has rang in sick and has a doctor’s note for a five week period, the entire take over was based on his ability to deal with the changes and remain employed for no less than his five years to retirement age. If he is sacked he will be paid his five year salary and any set bonuses, so I suppose he cannot lose monetary wise. He just needs coaching on his selfish pride issues. If it were me I would take the money and run. He has the knowledge and ability to work as a consultant, and get even more money than he is on now.

However my coaching is not to give advice, but to deal with the issues at hand, pride and the realization his baby is no longer his, he has to cut the umbilical cord and let go! Whether he goes or stays has no significance on the takeover company, so any demands he is making just fall on deaf ears. He has to realize he is surplus to requirements and bow out gracefully before they push him out. I know I sound negative but the obvious solution is staring him in the face, but he refuses to take the apple and see what lies on the other side of the fence.

After getting permission to do our coaching sessions at his home, we started with the basics such as what motivates him, what are his passions and what does he wish to achieve in his personal life and career. I purposely coached him in these areas so he could come to the realization he would be much more use to himself and his wife, if he took the money and enjoyed early retirement on full pay for five years. Slowly but surely my coaching worked and he decided to announce to the shareholders he would leave with immediate effect, and he even negotiated a huge leaving bonus, so you see there is life in the old dog yet. It was only after he left and we sat down for our closing coaching session, that he informed me he had used me to get what he wanted, it was his intention to walk away but not without the big payout. I had been used but it was a lesson I will never forget. Never underestimate your opponent!

The Street Lawyer

The Street Lawyer

The Barnes & Noble Review The Street Lawyer is Grisham’s latest legal thriller, a gripping page-turner much like his earlier book The Firm. This latest outing delves into the often overlooked world of the homeless, from the perspective of an overworked young lawyer who has never ventured beyond his sheltered upper-middle-class life. His world turns upside down as he realizes, through a series of coincidences and a little homework, that the firm he has given his life to is hiding a secret that if public could ruin the firm’s unstained name. Thirty-two-year-old Michael Brock is rising quickly in the competitive ranks of the Washington, D.C., law firm Drake & Sweeney. He has a society wife in medical school, the perfect address in Georgetown, and a baby — his Lexus. All bodes well for a seven-figure future (yes, six doesn’t quite cut it anymore) until he looks down the barrel of a .44 and meets the eyes of a homeless gunman at the other end. Brock knows this is no joke — the gun seems ‘to be working fine; the smell of its discharge was more noticeable than the odor of its owner.’ The gunman, known to Brock only as Mister, takes nine hostages and holds them in a sixth-floor conference room for 12 hours, bound together with rope and lined up against a wall. And if the firearm fails to intimidate, a few pounds of dynamite are neatly strapped to the gunman’s chest, handily connected to a single wire for mass detonation. Mister doesn’t want money, stock options, or a Lexus — he seeks retribution. Ignored as a street bum, Mister commands attention at the firm as he turns his gun on eachofthe hostages. He demands to see the lawyers’ tax returns, and as the 1050s arduously scroll out of the fax machine, Brock is sure that someone will be shot. With the assurance a loaded firearm provides, Mister reprimands his hostages for the total lack of charitable contributions on

Developers Learn Eb5 Financing For

(PRWEB) May 18, 2012

?Capturing Foreign Capital to Fund Projects through EB-5 Program Seminar? hosted by Brian Su, a leading expert on EB-5 marketing in China and Korea, is attracting commercial real estate developers, immigration attorneys, investment bankers, EB-5 executives, and venture capitalists, among others, to be educated on the latest happenings and trends in the Chinese and Korean immigrant investors market.

The June 8, 2012 event hosted at Embassy Suites Austin Central, will be centered on how to secure EB-5 funding from wealthy Chinese and Korean immigrant investors. The EB-5 regional center program has been a growing success, with much foreign investment pouring in from China and Korea. Rapid growth specifically in the Chinese economy has made the EB-5 program more relevant than ever before. The number of wealthy Chinese is growing at 9.7% annually, according to the GroupM Knowledge – Hurun Wealth Report 2011. Additionally, Merrill Lynch and Capgemini?s Asia-Pacific Wealth Report 2008 shows that in 2007, high net-worth individuals in China placed 21% of their assets in real estate versus a worldwide average of 14%. The preference the wealthy Chinese show in real estate, along with the current drop in housing prices and a steady RMB, have made real estate investment in the U.S., along with the EB-5 program, more appealing than ever before. In the past five years, more than $ 3 billion of foreign capital have been invested into the U.S. through EB-5, creating thousands of jobs in a variety of industries. Nearly 70% EB-5 Visas are issued to Chinese investors this year. The Seminar aims to help U.S. companies and individuals tap into more of this foreign capital.

The day-long event will be headed by Mr. Brian Su, who is well equipped to help U.S. capital seekers utilize the EB-5 Program. Mr. Su acts as President and CEO of Artisan Business Group, Inc., a national consulting firm specializing in the development of market offerings for business projects seeking foreign capital. Additionally, Mr. Su acts as President of the China EB-5 Market Council. He is also a member of the Association to the Investment in the USA. Guest speakers include Mr. Kevin Wright, President of Wright Johnson LLC, Mr. Clem Turner, Attorney of Clem Turner, Esq. Homeier & Law, P.C. and Dandan Zou, CEO of Texas Investment Regional Center.

This year?s event will provide both EB-5 professionals and those inexperienced with the program a great opportunity to learn more about Chinese and Korean market trends. Attendees of the event will obtain knowledge and experience that will be invaluable in their efforts to obtain EB-5 foreign capital. Those attending the event also have the opportunity to meet the prior day with Artisan Business Group?s CEO, Mr. Brian Su, for a 1-hour private consultation.
